I've lived in England now for 15 years and, unfortunately, get to see the boys very rarely. However, one match that I was not going to miss was the Cup Final of May 1991. I managed to get to the first semi-final against Celtic and thought we were robbed of a sure penalty. The night of the replay I was working a nightshift and had phoned home a few times for my wife to check the teletext. At one point she phoned me back to say that F.T. had come up against the score - FULL TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went berserk - we were in the final of the Scottish Cup. The next morning I phoned my brother to go to Fir Park and camp there until the tickets went on sale. The day they eventually did I was told that there were queues for miles. I GOT A TICKET. My wife and I travelled to Scotland the night before - Allison being 8 months pregnant, met up with my older brother - who had got leave from the Royal Navy. We went through to Motherwell on the Saturday morning to meet my other brother whose partner was 7 months pregnant !!!!!!!! On our way to Motherwell we passed the team bus of the winners of the Junior cup - good omen ? We got seats on a bus from Shotts, by an old Well buddy called Nanza. The game itself is a historical wonder for all Well fans. We met people who had come from ENGLAND, AUSTRALIA, THE AMERICAS and off course RUSSIA ? One of my enduring memories is missing the final whistle as I was stood on a stanchion looking at the crowd. We met up with our wives, daughters, sons, mums and old friends at the stadium to see and start the celebrations finally ending up in Girdwoods to toast the night away. We all went out on the streets to see them parade the Cup at Flemington Cross - with Davie Cooper holding it high, I must admit to shedding a tear. I still have the game on video and watch it regularly - showing it to friends who want to watch a GREAT game of football. A tenth anniversary final would be superb. |

I remember drinking out of a bottle of champagne on the pitch at Fir Park! I also remember my brother following the bus all round Motherwell on his bike. My dad would like a rerun of the bus tour of Motherwell,as he was still pi**** from the Thursday after spending 2 days in the Fir Park club before the game!!!!!! |
