GLF 70:A few wise words from the editor
Are some 'Well fans right to be so pessimistic just now??
Back in May 1996, Four-Four-Two magazine reviewed this esteemed publication and accused us of being "unfeasibly optimistic", "indifferent to impending disaster" and "lacking passion".Six of the nine contributors to issue 20 also have articles in today's issue, so hopefully if nothing else that proves this is a fanzine with a passionate core of writers!?!?The reviewer's main gripe was that due to the clubs plight, we should have been demanding the heads of all incumbents at Fir Park.
Looking back, we were rock bottom of the ten-team division, four points adrift of Falkirk and Thistle with only three wins and sixteen goals from twenty-five games, a front-line of Willie Falconer and John Hendry, and a squad including Stevie, Woods, Scott Howie,Greig Denham, Innes Ritchie, Alex Burns, Andy Roddie, Shaun McSkimming and none other than Eddie May, still convincing Manager McLeish he was worth the £100k plus Kirky and Paul McGrillen!!?!?!?!?
Currently many fans I speak to have more ill than good to say about most things Motherwell - but are they right????
A Sense of Perspective
Following an odd goal in five defeat at Ibrox, we went on a seven-game run winning six and drawing the other, didn't concede a single goal and ended the season eigth, fifteen point ahead of the relegated Bairns. So our optimisim wasn't quite so unfeasible eh!!
As I write we have just been removed from third spot in the SPL, lie three points behind Utd and six points ahead of bottom dogs Accies with five wins and sixteen goals from twelve matches (three of which were against the Old Firm) with a front-line of John Sutton and Chris Porter, and a squad including Graeme, Smith, Mark Reynolds, Stephen Hughes, Keith Lasley, David Clarkson, Jamie Murphy, Paul Quinn and Stevie Hammell playing for Mark McGhee and challenging for another European Tour.
I don't disagree that MFC could defend better, have a bigger squad, have more goals and points, treatthe fans better, reveiw decisions like gate pricing, Old Firm seating, ticket allocations, customer service, and life could well be a lot rosier if a Lanarkshire magnate bought out the current owner. But in the grand scheme of things, I reckon some people need to lighten up a bit at present.
Early Season's Greetings!!
Here's to a great festive period for the mighty 'Well!!If the current credit crunch is getting you down the ponder this - May 1996 was when GLF last raised it's price to £1so you're getting a bargain here!!!
Love 'n'stuff
