GLF 21:They Graced the Jersey - Charlie Aitken
No.2 Charlie Aitken
Motherwell never had a more loyal servant than Charlie Aitken, who after 17 years service retired when a knee injury ended his career.
Charlie came from the Lothian village of Gorebridge and started work as a grocer at 15 years old. Manager George Stevenson signed Charlie in 1949. Unfortunately for ‘Well he was then called up for National Service in 1952; his last act for the club was to open the Fir Park Club in 1966.
The years in between gave the Fir Park support one of its finest talents. He was twice voted Well’s ‘Player of the Year’, and was also named ‘Player of the Year’ for 1964 by “Rex” of the Sunday Mail. Charlie was awarded a testimonial in 1967.
As one of Scotland’s finest wing halves, the disgrace was that he never received a full cap for Scotland. However, during his whole career he was cautioned only once, a gentleman in every way.
