Worldnet 2005 - The Squad

Last updated : 14 July 2005 By Speedie

Twenty five are heading to Leeds going far beyond the maximum squad of 22 allowed for the tournament. But not to worry a few of the group have stated that they’re only going to soak up the atmosphere at Boddington Hall. Shockingly the three who won’t make it onto the field are probably the lucky ones.

Graeme Farmer travels again trying his utmost to keep a clean sheet for the first time since he debuted in the 2003 tournament. Last season’s player of the year will be vital in the quest for the Plate.

The defence takes on a very different look from 12 months ago. However, John Hendry returns for his fourth tilt at the tournament. He’ll be joined in the heart of defence by newcomer Gavin Hepworth. The Doncaster born stopper will play his first Worldnet for the Corner after joining the club last summer..

Ross Cunningham returns for his second year to provide competition both here and in the centre of the midfield.

On the left of defence manager Fraser will be able to pick from newcomer Mick Anderson, experienced Malcolm Boyd and the surprise package of the season Philip Speedie. The pattern is repeated of the right with Joe Smith returning from London jostling for position with Ross Mitchell and Ross Clark.

The midfield sees Dave Hendry on the left with competition likely from Anderson. On the other wing Ross Galloway will look to add to an impressive scoring record at Worldnet. The centre of midfield throws up many different options. Tony O’Neill has impressed in his 6 months with the side scoring a number of important goals. Manager David Fraser will play a smaller part than last year. So don’t rule out Cunningham, Ross Mitchell or Dave Hendry playing a part in the engine room.

Joe - the only striker worthy of the name
Joe Lynas is sure to play a big part in Fir Park Corner’s chances. The team’s top goalscorer last term is likely to be partnered by hardworking Derek Wilson who has returned following an on off season with the team. Scott Mullen will also play his first game for the team since February.

Further signings have been made by manager Fraser which will add to depth to the squad for WorldNet and the 2005/2006 IFA League campaign but he’s playing it coy and is yet to release full details of the new players. However, Fir Park Corner are certainly not at full strength. Mark Gardiner’s recent run of form has helped the side win their last three matches, he’ll be missed for his attacking play. As will Darryn Alexander who has added a new dimension to the team’s play since joining in March. Other newcomer Graeme Ramage will have to wait for his first taste of Worldnet. David Wyper also misses the trip south where he would have looked to push Smith, Mitchell and Clark for right back. Chris Miller, a late call off, is the only notable absentee from last year’s squad.
