The match started in fairly even fashion with both sides taking time to adjust to the rather lumpy ash pitch. Jack Daniels had the better of the early chances but when they eventually took the lead FPC kept things together and didn’t collapse (yet). Indeed, a number of chances to equalise were missed before a mistake at the back allowed JDs to double their lead. Another goal, almost straight from kick off, made it 3-0 and there was no chance of coming back this time.
FPC missed a penalty, which was harshly awarded after Del ran into an unfortunate defender who was lying on the ground. Mark skelped the inside of the post, promoting Dave H to penalty taking duty in the next game. JDs scored another twice before half time, including one from a lovely passing move, to make the score 5-0 at the interval.
The game continued in the same way with JDs passing the ball about and FPC working hard for little return. A scrambled goal from a free kick made it six but FPC struck back with Fraz thumping one high into the net. More goals followed for JDs but I’ve forgotten the details – around numbers six, seven and eight they all began to merge somewhat. FPC missed chances with Dave H, Del and Stevie M being the principle sinners although Marshall made up for this by curling home a first time shot after a slack pass.
Then came the turning point of the game when JDs made it nine with the help of a wicked deflection. If it hadn’t been for this cruel piece of luck, FPC would surely have gone on to take a well deserved draw (aye, sure…).
Time remained for JDs to hit a penalty off the same post that denied Mark earlier and with that the referee brought the game to a close. It was a bit of a hammering but the game was played in an enjoyable spirit and a good time was had by all.
