Having several key players missing was a factor, but the players on the day simply weren't up to the task and thoroughly deserved to lose the match.
The home side opened the scoring when a cross caused havoc in the penalty area. Ross Mitchell hesitated to allow a striker to nip in between him and the goalkeeper to nod the ball into the net. Barely two minutes later and the game was over as a contest. A low drive from twenty yards crept inside the post and the difficult surface and weather conditions left the goalkeeper with no chance.
The visitors handed themselves a life-line before the interval when Joe Lynas capitalised on some poor control by a defender to race through and lift the ball over the advancing goalkeeper.
Into the second half, the Corner had a couple of let-offs with the woodwork being rattled no less than three times by the dominant home side, although a Dave Hendry free kick did cause some panic in the Falkirk side's penalty area. The final nail in the FPC coffin came midway through the second period when Ross Mitchell went to ground at the byeline, was skinned by the nippy winger to allow an easy tap-in to make the score 3-1.
The Motherwell side will now have to turn their attention back to the league as their most realistic avenue for silverware, but the performance will have to be much better to have any hope of getting anything from next week's visit of
