The game took 20 minutes before it settled down with both teams having their chances. Kevin Totten opened the scoring after taking ball around the keeper and placing it into the empty net. It wasn't long before man of the match Jamie Weir made it 2-0 with a fantastic 24 yard strike past the helpless Milan keeper. Weir then made it 3-0 just before half-time.
The second half saw Motherwell up their game and Kevin Totten notched his second with a cultured turn and shot into the top corner from eight yards. On the hour Motherwell were rewarded a penalty which saw Milan go down to ten men, with Weir stepping up to complete his hat-trick. Milan finished with nine after a further red card and Motherwell saw the match out comfortably to progress to the next stage of the cup.
