Well Without a Win in 2006

Butcher showed faith in the same eleven which did so well against Celtic in the CIS semi and they started the game in confident manner. There were several neat passing moves inside the opening ten minutes but then we resorted to firing long balls up field to McDonald.

Kerr's free kick leads to a goal chance for McLean

An out swinging free kick from Kerr found Foran beyond the far post and his return found
McLean’s head. Combe had to produce a fine save to prevent the opener. The Killie keeper was replaced minutes later and we had the unusual spectacle of two Graeme Smiths in opposite goals.

McBride had a clearing header off our goal line but we seemed to have the upper hand. Ten minutes later we fell to sucker ball through the middle.
Wales got there first and scored from the edge of the box.

Hammell almost equalised with a smashing free kick from twenty yards. The ball beat the keeper but struck the wrong side of the post.

We had a chance within seconds of the restart when Hammell released McDonald but the chance was gone when he failed to supply Hamilton who had made the supporting run into the box.

Our Smith made a fine save from a long range shot by Nish and moments later the pair were toe by toe on the goal line when the keeper could manage only a weak clearing punch under pressure. The ball fell to Wales who took the chance to bag his second goal.

We were two down with forty minutes left. There was no lack of effort but little sign of a goal. We changed to
4-3-3 with Foran joining the strikers. Thermeus then replaced Foran as we continued to press forward. McDonald was next to hit the woodwork with a shot on the turn.

McGarry and O’Donnell replaced McDonald and McBride as Terry tried to recover something from the game.
McLean saw a goal bound header saved on the line following a corner. It was clear we were to get no breaks. Just to underline the fact, Themeus lasted only fifteen minutes before he was sent packing after tangling with Wright. Referee Dougal interpreted his push a violent conduct and the Frenchman left the field.

Our quest to reach the upper half of the table took a severe blow and with games running out a win against Dundee United on Saturday is crucial.
