Well Deserved Cup Win

The game was delayed for ten minutes as the police and club debated on whether ambulance cover was required for this game. As a result the gates were not opened until fifteen minutes before the scheduled start time and large queues had formed outside the ground.

Bobby Donnelly
Our makeshift defence had Hammell, Quinn, Bobby Donnelly (an eighteen year old making his first team debut) and McCormack strung out in front of Meldrum. The midfield consisted of Kerr, Fagan, O’Donnell and Smith and the front pair were McDonald and Hamilton.

Both the strikers found the net. McDonald confidently converted a penalty late in the first half to cancel out a header by Jones. Hamilton nicked the winner in a minute from the end. This was a hotly disputed scrambled effort and the goal was awarded by the East Stand assistant causing a flurry of protests from the Accies.

The game settled early into a predictable pattern. We camped in the Hamilton half for long periods yet were unable to create much in the way of clear cut chances. These fell to the visitors in there rare visits to the Cooper end. The fragility of the back four was evident when easy chances were missed in the seventh and twentieth minutes. It was third time lucky in thirty three minutes when Jones won the charge to a free kick across the box.

Queues at Fir Park!

Skippy’s penalty steadied the ship and Accies’ chances. They showed very little attacking presence in the second half and we started to lay siege to the Hamilton goal.

Both McDonald and O’Donnell had far post headers which McEwan managed to clear though there were should that the ball had crossed the line. Hamilton rattled the post with a fine drive. Meldrum was called into action with twenty minutes remaining when a well struck free kick caused him to fly to his bottom right corner.

Kick off

With extra time looming Hamilton managed to force the ball over the line as wave after wave of Motherwell attacks finally succeeded.

A job well done.
