We were well beaten by a struggling Kilmarnock team at Rugby Park today. Eric and Terry will now realise the size of the task they have as they witnessed the worst display yet under their management.
Even allowing for the weakened team (Kelly missing and Pearson only able to make the bench) this was a poor, poor performance. Both Pat Nevin and Eric Black had spoken during the week of their support for Bobby Williamson but its going a bit far when the players start showing their sympathy by their on field actions!
They sneaked the lead from an eighteen yard shot from Boyd which beat Brown at his left hand post. Nothing in it at the break but it was difficult to see us scoring.
The half time team talk was totally ineffective. We were awful. The only bright spark was Scott Leitch. All our moves had a contribution from him. He harried, passed, encouraged and led by example. A pity that none of the others were able to follow his example. It was a cruel twist of fate which turned the hero into a villain. Leitch was too cute in trying to play keepie uppie before passing but he lost possession and had to set off in pursuit of Di Giacomo. He caught up with the attacker on the touchline but slid in and ended up on his rear. The young striker then turned Strong and slid the ball under the goalie for the killer goal.
In truth, the second goal hardly mattered. We could have played all night and still not scored. Again our lack of punch up front has been embarrassing. After the game a sad Eric Black said "We need a presence up front" - too true!
