Motherwell began its Betfred Cup campaign with a comfortable 5-0 won over Edinburgh City. A first half Frear hat-trick and goals from Tait and Main ended the contest in the first half.
We eased into the game with three goals inside the first quarter. Cadden supplied Frear at the far post for the first before Tait let loose from outside the box for a fine second.
A debut for the new scoreboard
A foul on Donnelly led to goal number three. Main’s free kick struck the wall but it fell nicely for Frear and he took his chance. The winger earned the match ball when he cut in from the right to finish with his left to make the score 4-0 before the half-hour.
Antell in the City goal denied Main with a fine save but our striker got on the score sheet in 44 minutes when his shot beat the ‘keeper to deliver a healthy 5-0 lead at the break.
Gorrin, Johnson and Sammon were introduced in the second half as Cadden, Bowman and Main made way but there was no further scoring .
Motherwell now lie in second place in the Group G table, three points behind Queen of the South but with a game in hand. Next up is a trip to Stranraer on Saturday.
