Hibs travelled to Fir Park looking to cement their third place and went into the game full of confidence following their excellent win over Celtic previous week.
The game did not follow the Hibs script in the early stages as it was Motherwell who took the game to them and keeper Simon Brown had to look sharp in the second minute to deny Martyn Corrigan as he saved near the post.
Motherwell capitalised on their good start when fine play between Jim Hamilton, Kerr and Scott McDonald forced a corner. Barry-John Corr's kick took a nick at the front post and landed for Stephen Craigan at the back post to hammer home.
The large travelling Hibbs support was silenced by this goal, but they were out of their seats on 27th minutes when Steven Whittaker's 25-yard effort was tipped onto the post by Gordon Marshall.
It was Motherwell who finished the half the stronger but could only muster a couple of weak efforts from Hamilton.
The second half started with the home side doubling the lead with almost a carbon copy of the first goal. Corr's corner found Craigan and the defender had all the time in the world to pick his spot to head past the stranded brown.
The visitors were thrown a lifeline midway through the second half when Craigan was adjudged to have fouled Dean Shiels just inside the box, but Garry O'Connor's penalty was hit too straight and was superbly saved by Marshall.
With ten minutes left Hibs were given another opportunity to get back into the game when they were awarded a soft free0kick 25 yards from goal.
Gary Caldwell's kick hit the home side's defensive wall and found its way into the net via Marshall's right-hand post.
Hibs kept going and snatched a point in the final minute when Ivan Sproule rushed past Paul Quinn and his cross found Amadou Konte.
His first effort was blocked by Craigan, but the striker had the presence of mind to stick out a foot and prod the ball over the line.
