A run of poor results can damage confidence and increase pressure on the players, the manager and all the back room staff. Negativity creeps on to the terracing. Every mistake on the pitch however small looks and feels horrendous to the players and is met with increasing howls of derision from the fans. Players soon don’t want to be on the pitch never mind want the ball. I fear we are heading into this scenario much too quickly without seemingly playing that badly.
What we need is a nice easy game to get our confidence back. A game where we can rest our star player against a side packed full of 3rd rate foreigners who are already out of Europe and only managed a draw with Celtic in their last league encounter. They don’t come much easier than Rangers away. We can’t lose whatever the result.
A heavy defeat is what we expect, anything else is a bonus and would set us up nicely for the forthcoming crunch games against Livi and Thistle.
All the debate at the moment seems to be about the merits of our available goal keeping resources. Woods or Scooby Doo? Will Terry stick with Woods or will he see Saturday’s game as the ideal opportunity to blood the Frenchman before a critical point in the season? Between a rock and a hard place is the expression that springs to mind!
Obviously we will be missing McFadden and hopefully the break will do him good and let him ponder on his abysmal disciplinary record. Let’s hope all other squad members will be fit and raring to go.
As previously mentioned I don’t expect an awful lot from Saturday. The main objective will be to avoid any injuries or further yellow cards and to move on to more important matters in a couple of weeks.
