You Are Not Alone

October 26, 2002, Motherwell 1-5 Livingston.

Astonishingly this was a fairly well balanced game. They just scored more goals than we did. Several more, in fact. Khaled Kemas did score a screamer but it was nothing more than a consolation. We went on to finish bottom of the league however we did reach the semi final of the Scottish Cup, losing 4-3 to Rangers (!).
Livingston finished 9th.

July 28, 2001. Dunfermline 5-2 Motherwell.

We went a goal down early on but a David Kelly penalty brought us level before the break. We were looking good and at half time there was only one team in it. They then came out for the second half and pulverised us. It was 5-1 at one point and could have been more. Oh dear. We went on to finish 11th,
Dunfermline 6th.

October 17, 1998. St Johnstone 5-0 Motherwell.

Billy Davies’ first game in charge went spectacularly wrong. George Boyle scored from the half way line and we were generally shambolic. Remarkably we then went on to beat Rangers days later after Brannan and Spencer had signed up. Davies led us to 7th in his first season, the Saints finished 3rd and lost the League Cup final.

October 26, 1996. Rangers 5-0 Motherwell.

It was an even 0-0 at half time! McSkimming missed a great chance to put us in one up at the break and we were made to pay. Gascoigne and Laudrup ran riot in the second forty-five minutes and we left with our tails between our legs. We finished 8th, Rangers won the league by five points.

Dundee United 6-1 Motherwell. We were a great side and United struggling. When we went 1-0 up through TC there should only have been one winner. For some reason though, this was the day Alex McLeish decided to change from Tommy McLean’s 3-5-2 and play 4-4-2. We fell apart as cross after cross destroyed Scott Howie like Chinese cuts. Six blooming one. We finished 2nd, United got relegated!

So, there will always be defeats and occasionally they will be heavy. Feel free to add your ‘favourite’ memories on the message board!
