Will he? Won't he?

McGhee & Leitch
We are well used to players using the club as a stepping stone to 'bigger things'. For years the Fir Park youth system has found and nurtured local boys and given some the chance to progress to first team football. One of the joys of being a Motherwell fan in recent years has been to watch the likes of McFadden and pals develop from their teenage years and eventually receive international recognition.

It is far less common for our manager to be the bookies favourite for any big job. Although McLeish was blooded at Motherwell and rose to the top job via Easter Road and Ibrox, he never earned the full confidence of the 'Well support. Indeed, many still blame him for failing to make the most of the fine team he inherited from Tommy McLean.

This time around things seem to be different. McGhee, now a mature 50 years old, is in his sixth managerial post. He has a wealth of experience south of the border and his effect on the current Motherwell squad has been nothing short of amazing.

The transformation of Malpas' plodders into McGhee's magicians with hardly any change in personnel as put him in the spotlight at this opportune time. William Hill's have him at 7/4 favourite for the post (ahead of another Motherwell managerial protégé Billy Davies at 9/4).

If he were to be offered the post he would leave with the best wishes of the Motherwell support but there would be much regret that our recent change in fortune could be put at risk.
