Frankie DuBourdeau has been offered a new contract and despite rumoured interest from Coventry, the club will be eager to keep him. Kevin McDonald and Steven Craig have also been given an extra year to prove their worth.
Loan signings Richard Offiong and Tony Vaughan will be returned to their clubs and we will make no effort to prise them away. Offiong has contributed little to the first team and despite a few good appearances early on, Vaughan will not be a great loss either.
Perhaps the saddest departure is that of Stevie Woods. Whether or not you’re a fan of his, Woods has given his all for Motherwell over several years. Yes he has made mistakes but so have most of our players. There will not be many more players who match the length of service Woods has put in.
The other experienced player who will be on his way is Dirk Lehmann. Dirk has worked very hard this season but since his injury at the turn of the year, he has not looked like the player he was. Even so, he contributed some vital goals last season and is still our second top scorer this season.
Dougie Ramsay, after what seems like years on the fringes, will be asked to move on and in truth a move will probably do him good. He has shown little to suggest he has the talent needed for the SPL and a new challenge at a lower league team might kick start his career.
The surprise freebie in the list was David Clarke. Despite not featuring in the first team, Clarke has shown a lot of promise in the U21s. He seems to be able to play a number of positions but breaking into the left hand side of the first eleven – featuring Hammell, Pearson and McFadden – was always going to be tough. Clarke will definitely get a chance to prove himself elsewhere.
Completing the list are Iain Russell and Darren Jack. Russell has been on loan at Dumbarton and scored three goals in helping them to survive in the Second Division. Jack looked out of his depth even in U21 games for us and sadly he will struggle to make a living in the game.
