What might have been.

There were many who took the view that our name was on the Cup this season. The team has been a revelation since mark McGhee took control and there was a confidence that we would be a match for anyone in the draw.

Despite a tough opener in the competition at Tynecastle we managed to recover from a two goal deficit after an hour to earn a replay. That game, the first since the sad loss of our captain, gave us hope that the team had recovered and that the dream was still alive.

McCormack's penalty was enough to win the replay and we faced Dundee, at home, in the next round knowing that success would take us to Palmerston. Although we knew the dangers of playing lower division opposition it was difficult to resist the idea that a route to a semi final was within reach. And once there anything might have been possible.

After two postponements we finally played Dundee on a Monday night. We failed to turn on our expected form and fell behind to two goals early in the second half. Darren Smith pulled one back and the dark blues had two sent off in the last ten minutes but we failed. In truth they deserved the win and their fans get the reward of the long trek from Dundee to Dumfries.

It's a journey many of us in the central belt would have been happy to take. Instead we'll watch the rain run down the window and think of what might have been.
