'Well Win in Ayr

Who is he phoning this time?
We started in the bright seaside sunshine and very quickly found ourselves having to stand firm against an early onslaught from the Honest Men. Meldrum had to make two good stops inside as many minutes and we struggled to make any inroads to the Ayr goal.

Nevertheless we got the opener in twelve minutes with our first significant attack. Ross McCormack crossed from the left wing and Lasley was inside the six yard box for the scoring header. We settled down and began to look more comfortable. McCormack's class stood out and he teased the defence with some tasty dribbles.

The home side equalised on the half hour. They won a corner in front of the 'Well fans and the resulting goal line clearance from Lasley lead to a free kick at the edge of the 'D'. Dunn's low attempt took a wild deflection off of Nixon and Meldrum could only watch helplessly as it fell into the net to his left.

McCormack set up our second goal five minutes later. He showed wonderful control with his head to set up a run into the box (leaving Eddie Forrest in his wake) and his pacy squared ball was met by Clarkson who made no mistake and scored from close in.

A first half attack
There were three half time changes from us and five from Ayr.

Clarkson grabbed his second when McCormack's pass released him with only Corr to beat. He made no mistake and side footed to the keeper's left corner.

The game flowed from end to end and Martin had to rely on his defenders on a few occasions to relieve the pressure.

Reynolds looked as calm and composed as ever and took time to instruct his centre back partner Nixon. Unfortunately the young back was invited to take an early bath when he felled Wardlaw and the referee felt he had no option, friendly or not, to send him off for a 'last man' foul.

The substitutions continued apace and we ended the game with only Mensing and Malloy as the only players over the ripe old age of twenty. A late thrill came from Cammy Murray when a twenty five yard effort skimmed the bar.

With most of the season's preparations underway we can expect to have a better understanding of McGhee's preferred eleven when Nottingham Forrest come to town on Saturday.
