The game started evenly although with several first team players starting, Kilmarnock were probably the favourites to take all three points. They missed the only early chance when someone fired across the face of goal when it looked easier to guide the ball into the net.

Jack came close on Monday night
Darren Jack and Stevie Ferguson were our front pairing and both came close to breaking the deadlock. Jack turned well to shoot from eighteen yards but could only fire straight at Meldrum. Then it was Ferguson’s turn to threaten but after jinking past a couple of defenders in the box, Meldrum’s leg denied him a fine goal.

It wasn’t all one way traffic though and Gary McDonald thumped a cracking volley off the bar from eighteen yards.

Killie made the better start to the second half and it was no shock when they eventually took the lead. A defender ran past a couple of players and caught DuBourdeau by surprise with a shot that ripped into the roof of the net.

Motherwell shocked the small crowd by hitting back immediately. The Killie defence failed to cut out a cross which reached Clarke at the back post. He managed to get his left foot to the ball and hook it across Meldrum and into the net.

Kilmarnock had more of the possession for the rest of the game but only forced two real chances, both of which were well saved by DuBourdeau. We did have a couple of threatening breakaways but the final ball prevented us from getting close to the three points.

Too many players had off nights for us to win but Ian Russell did his first team prospects no harm with an excellent performance.
