Well Society still in talks with Hutchison

Around 50 members gathered to receive the annual accounts and discuss progress to fan ownership in a question and answer session.

The financial headlines are that the Society monthly income is now around £10,500 and growing and the total made available to the club is now more than half a million.

Douglas Dickie, Jim McMahon and Tom Feely fielded a range of questions that drew out some information about the ongoing negotiations following the Memorandum of Understanding with Les Hutchison.

In March the expectation was that a transfer might be agreed "in a matter of weeks" but talks have dragged on and by the end of the meeting it was clear that some hurdles have yet to be overcome before agreement is reached.

The Society board has been taking legal and accounting advice and a due diligence report has now been received.  The overriding concern is to ensure that any agreement delivers sustainability (that word must have been used a hundred times in the course of the evening).  Hence there is a need for flexibility in loan repayment to allow the club to succeed in the years to come.  The board will not agree to any commitment that puts the club's viability at risk.  "A deal will only be done if there is a good chance of it being successful".

The budget for next season assumes a tenth place finish, no player sales and no cup run.  It is likely in season 17/18 that a big increase in income from the SPFL will start to flow and the restrictions might be eased.

However, the Society has to increase its income.  Around a third of the original intake have failed to make subsequent payments and they are being encouraged to re-commit.  Local businesses are being encouraged to join and more supporters have to be engaged.

Paul Goodwin from the Scottish Football Supporters Association was on hand to offer a wider perspective on the progress of community ownership and he summed up the position at Motherwell with the comment, " I'm impressed with the progress made so far, there is a clear pathway if the fans want it.  It will not be easy.  Go out and engage others.  What is the alternative?"
