Motherwell, fresh from the midweek triumph in Dingwall, will be hoping for more joy on Saturday when they face St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.
The busy schedule offered little time for the squad to celebrate the League Cup success. The priority on Thursday and Friday is rest and recovery following the hard fought 120 minutes against Ross County. It was Motherwell’s best result in a cup competition for many years and reinforces the growing level of self belief inside Fir Park.
Last visit to McDiarmid December 2016
St Johnstone won their season opener at Rugby Park with goals from Wotherspoon and returning favourite O’Halloran but their interest in the League Cup ended on Tuesday when they lost at home to Partick Thistle.
They have the bonus of an extra day to prepare for this fixture and that advantage may show as the game reaches its final stage. Tommy Wright described his side’s forward play as “rusty”, if that lasts for another week we won’t complain.
Bigirimana, Cadden and MacLean scored against Ross County and Carson played his part with a couple of saves that produced gasps from both sets of supporters. Motherwell do not find the net three times often and very rarely without a recognised striker making a contribution.
We held on for a point on our only visit last season and a similar result on this occasion would be viewed as a success. 1-1
