As the second half wore on it was clear that we were struggling. United, with three substitutes on the park, were a team desperate to claw themselves back into the game and they stepped up the pace. Motherwell’s players seemed to be wading though treacle – the pace and guile that delivered the first half lead had gone.
It was a time for making blocks, last ditch tackles and lung bursting runs on legs that were pleading for rest. They rose to the challenge and can be proud of their efforts.
The achievement of beating Dundee United four times in a season on our own patch is worthy of note.
The first was a 2-1 SPL win in October when United scored all three goals!
Four days later a CIS triumph when Alan Gown scored the only goal.
In March we beat outplayed them in the Scottish Cup quarter final replay.
We made it four in a row last night with a 2-1 SPL win.
Our manager war fll of praise for the team.
“That result is outstanding as Dundee United are an excellent side. They've won six league games on the bounce, beating Rangers at Ibrox, and they have quality players.
We had four regulars out and we had lads running on empty in the last 15-20 minutes. But we hung in there.
We had four lads in the stand tonight who are itching to get back and, hopefully, because we have a good week off after the Hearts game before the Scottish Cup semi-final, we'll have time to recharge the batteries.
I'll have some tough decisions come the semi but Hearts are foremost in our minds."
