United - 24h On

There were more than a few eyebrows raised in disbelief when the tannoy announcer listed the attendance as 6070. There might have been some double or triple counting going on but there was a decent turnout of Motherwell fans who were happy to fork out a fiver to see their claret and amber favourites.

They did not have much to cheer about during the game, nor did the home support. However, they did make their feelings known when Marvellous Meldrum had to leave the field. The keeper's display frustrated the United strike force and he was the man of the match. We can be satisfied that there will be healthy competition for the goalkeeping position next season.

A standing ovation was offered to the players following the full time whistle. Several of the players made an effort to approach the travelling band to express thanks for the recognition of their efforts. Krisztian Vadocz enjoyed the ceremony and he was still clapping the fans as the last of his team mates disappeared into the tunnel. Let's hope that we can find a way to retain his services.

Game over, season over

What do we make of the fact that both the manager and his assistant avoided the end of season backslapping? They were in a no win situation and probably choose the diplomatic retreat wisely. The comments from Malpas after the game expressed a deal of frustration that, as he saw it, any comments to the fans would be turned against him. "I can't say anything to the fans as whatever I say is being ripped to shreds and dissected. We need to get together as a club, the fans, the players, the staff and the directors and try to take the club forward."

There can be little argument with his last sentence. If he survives the expected change of ownership and still has the lead role at the start of the season, then he is entitled to expect that everyone with the best interests of the club at heart pulls together to the benefit of the team.
