When the season’s fixtures are planned an assumption is made that teams will finish in the same half of the table as in the previous year. In that case there is a guarantee that all clubs will have a balance of home and away matches.
The positions of teams after 33 games this season is far removed from the end of the last campaign. Motherwell, Ross County and Hearts were not in the top six and they replace the faltering trio of Inverness, Dundee and Dundee United.
