For that, we should be grateful. Yes it was Boyle's money to gamble and yes he was reckless. But there have been horror stories of chairmen elsewhere who desperately clung to power because they were personally owed money. While Boyle has to shoulder a lot of responsibility for our current predicament, even those who dislike him intensely must now get behind his efforts to bring us out of administration.
However, whilst yesterday’s news was obviously good, there are still questions to be answered. Was Martin Rose offered a seat on the board because of he is the chairman of the Trust or just because of who he is?
If it was because of the Trust, is it safe to assume that his board position is dependant on remaining chairman of the Trust?
The Supporters’ Trust has come in for a lot of criticism in recent months. Some of it was unfair but the most valid point raised in defence of the Trust was that it could not have any real direction until John Boyle made his intentions clear.
When the club is free of administration there could be the opportunity for the Trust to buy shares in the club. This should act as a boost to everyone involved - and, just as importantly, prove to doubters how useful the Trust can be. Whether many fans will have the means or desire to donate, say, £500 remains to be seen but the opportunity should be there for those who want to make a bigger financial contribution. Also, the Trust should now step up their fundraising activities. It seems logical that fans will be more willing to participate and invest when there is a clear use for their money.
The other concern at the minute is the lack of an buyer. Whilst we can still come out of administration without one, it would be preferable to have a clean break from the Boyle regime. If Boyle can only resign and appoint his own man at the AGM, there will always be the suspicion that he is pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Still, the concerns that are relevant now are only important because we are coming out of administration. If, on Black Wednesday, we could be offered a route out of admin with our SPL status intact and two out of the big three youngsters still in place, it would have seemed wonderful.
Rejoice and be happy!
