The Well Society is to be congratulated for the invitation it has extended to around 40 of the Syrian refugees who are now in Lanarkshire. They will attend Fir Park on Saturday for the Betfred cup match against Berwick Rangers.
One of the central principles of the Society is to foster and develop relations with the community. Motherwell FC is now a fan owned club and its future success depends on a reciprocal arrangement with individuals and businesses from the local area and the reaching out to those newly arrived is a natural fit.
Those who have been helped by the resettlement scheme have survived a horror in their homeland and initiatives like this can extend a welcome.
Jason Henderson, a Society board member, is quoted on thewellsociety.co.uk saying,
"Lanarkshire has welcomed a large number of refugees from Syria over the past couple of years, families who have been forced from their homes thousands of miles away and are working hard to now build their lives as our neighbours and friends – we want to give them the opportunity to enjoy a day out at Fir Park on Saturday, take in the experience of a cup tie in Scotland, and, with any luck, cheer the Steelmen on to victory!"
