There is something about McFadden that makes people want to go to football games. Obviously he is immensely talented, but there's more to it than that.
The backchat to referees and incredibly short temper was always a flaw in his game but it kept things exciting and it involved the fans in the action. Motherwell fans will always worship the ground Faddy walked on and now opposition fans will also acknowledge what he can do. The resentment and anger he caused at Firhill and places like that is simply a testament to how good he is - but I bet you every Jag at
It is fitting that Faddy's last game for us should not only have been at
There have been so many truly wonderful goals that it is hard to nominate a favourite. We will never again see so many twists and turns, so many shimmies and sensational runs and, in all honesty, so many bookings.
However, as one poster on the board commented, Faddy WAS Motherwell to many of the younger generation. What should be remembered though, is that he was not. McFadden was blindingly good and has done more than enough to give himself legend status. But he was just one player.
The club will still exist tomorrow, the team will line up at Easter Road and the fans will still support them. McFadden was the best Motherwell player I've ever seen and I will follow his career with interest. But Motherwell will survive with the loss of another player...we always do.
