The unexpected win at Ibrox left 'Well fans overjoyed that the Govan hoodoo had at last been overcome but there was an understandable reluctance to engage in a full scale celebration. The dragon has not yet been slayed.
In the words of Ian Baraclough, "this tie is not over". Our manager has rightly been praised for getting his tactics right and, of course, the players have received due recognition of their execution of the plan. Their ability to break with pace and breach the Rangers defence three times must instil the belief that they can finish the job.
We know from bitter experience that our strength is not in defence. It would be a surprise if we set out with the hope of holding on to the lead. The team have demonstrated that they can score against this Rangers team and the ambition must be to add to the tally. A two goal lead is "precarious" but the manager knows that a 'Well goal or two would give the opposition a mountain to climb.
Fears about the forced substitutions of Hammell and Pearson have receded somewhat with the news that they were "feeling easier". Their appearance in Sunday's line-up would strengthen our belief that we can succeed.
What strategy will we employ? The flexiblity gained by using McDonald as an auxiliary midfielder allowed us to add to our defensive capabilities and the success of the two wingers offered speed in the counter attack. It would not be a surprise to see the plan repeated.
The opposition have a fewer options. Their imperative will be to push forward seeking the first goal. The power of Boyd comes from his prowess in the air while the guile of Miller and Vuckic has more effectiveness on the ground. McGregor will miss the game as he serves a suspension.
With the home crowd in the majority the team will have a huge vocal backing. One more concentrated effort will get us over the line and ensure that our 30 year run in the top flight continues. If the plan works the champagne will be uncorked as we celebrate a 2-1 win.
