The news can hardly have come as a surprise to anyone who forced themselves outdoors on Wednesday morning. The sight of folk doubled up as they were beaten by wind and driving rain gave a heavy clue that we would be struggling to see any football in Motherwell.
The game was due to be played under a Met Office high wind warning had it taken place, meaning that the entertainment value of the pitch would surely be diminished as both sets of players would be concentrating on clearing their lines with thoughts of the passing game left in the dressing rooms.
As it happens there was some "significant structural damage to the ground" in the words of the official website and the postponement was called around lunchtime. At least the early news will avoid the horror of a late call-off and the disruption can be minimised. It has been agreed with Dunfermline that the game will take place on Tuesday 24 January with a 7.45pm kick off. It falls between Motherwell's visit to Tannadice on Saturday 21st and the visit of St Johnstone of the 28th.
Jennings will now complete his two match ban by watching from the stand at Ibrox on Monday. We can debate whether any advantage can be gained from the switch but many will argue that our record in Govan is so bad that heis presence might be worth more against Dunfermline than Rangers.
We will finish 2011 in third place in the table with half of the league games played. let's hope for a calmer New Year!
