All twelve clubs were represented at today’s meeting and Bryan Jackson sat in the Motherwell seat. At lunchtime today he is quoted as saying “The 10 SPL clubs will resign within the next 24 hours”.
All summer there has been a dispute between the ten and the old firm about the voting structure embedded in the SPL constitution.
The Two took advantage of the requirement for a 11-1 majority. They blocked the acceptance of a TV deal and that prompted the revolt of the majority of the clubs.
Despite agreement with the BBC for a two year TV deal (a radio agreement is expected by the end of the week) there remains the problem of the voting structure.
The ten propose that an 8-4 balance be enough to carry decisions but the big two reject that notion. In consequence the ten are to tender their resignations from the SPL and the deadline for the two year notice period means that action will have to be taken before the new season begins at the weekend.
Pat Nevin was among those pushing for the exclusion of the old firm and it seems that our interim administrator is adopting the same policy.
There is no doubt that ‘Well fans would be delighted to see the two Glasgow giants be removed from the league and it looks like they will be presented will a simple choice – either accept the change to the voting structure or see the SPL collapse.
However, before we start planning for life without the big bad two, remember that there is still time for a compromise. Don't hold your breath.
