Although many tipped a home win against St Johnstone there was no suggestion that we would score so many without reply. The manager was generous with his praise for the team's performance, “The second half was on a par with anything I have seen here and as good as we have produced during my spell as manager. It was the perfect way to start the New Year.”
Young 'Well fans warm up for the game
We've been treated to nine goals in the space of four days from six scorers and heard our ability to find the net described as clinical and ruthless. Gone is the negative goal difference and now there is a confidence that comes with a winning streak. Our last stretch of five on the trot came under McGhee's spell when in November/December 2007 we had wins against Inverness (3-0), Kilmarnock (1-0), Gretna (3-0),Hearts (2-1) and Aberdeen (3-0). The dusty pages of the record books need to be scoured to identify a longer run.
The transfer window has now opened and we'll face a month with some degree of uncertainty. McCall revealed that Ainsworth's move to us just needs "rubber stamping" but he also mentioned that there would be an added cost to our wage bill. The temptation to accept a bid for, say, Hutchinson must be growing and it would be fascinating to be a fly on the wall when the manager and chief executive discuss the way forward. There will be a very narrow course to be charted between the rock of over-ambition and the fair wind that sees us safely delivered to the upper reaches of the league at the end of the season.
In the shorter term we have the chance of another home game this Saturday lunchtime when Inverness and their new manager come to Fir Park. The team have given us a great platform for the rest of the season, let's hope our fans turn out in big numbers to give the support they deserve.
