It is hard to be too critical of the players. They delivered safety with room to spare and it was hardly a surprise that a dip in performance would follow. The two remaining fixtures, Ross County (a) and Celtic (a), will not be seen by many in claret and amber. Supporters can also be excused for turning to summer pursuits.
The cash reward that comes with an upper half finish should enable the club to keep its head above water. It was a bizarre spectacle. As the end of the match approached literally hundreds of yellow jacketed stewards entered the stadium from the ticket office corner and filed around the track carrying a plastic mesh to act as a further barrier. At least the crowd were distracted from the meaningless proceedings on the pitch.
The atmosphere was dampened to such an extent that a significant proportion of the crowd had disappeared before the players appeared for their lap of honour. It was a bit of a damp squib.
The pitch has now been lifted and preparations for the new season begin. The two remaining games are academic.
