Given the loss of five goals in the previous game the defence are due a hat tip for their defiance in the second half. We'll do them the favour of ignoring the lapse in concentration that allowed St Johnstone's equaliser. There might be some debate about the man of the match award, the sponsors gave it to Hutchinson, but there's no doubt that the back four will take comfort from their tightened operation.
It was good to see McFadden back on the pitch. His flair and dogged persistence has been missed in the last few weeks. Sutton took a hard knock and had to leave the field after treatment. That prompted the realisation that he has been a rock for us this season. He has played in all 40 games and contributed 21 goals and much of this campaign’s success is due to his consistency.
The league table makes pleasant reading. We have exceeded the points total earned in last year’s successful season with two games in hand and have more wins than everyone but Celtic. Fir Park on its way to fortress status, we have recorded 12 wins from 18 matches with only 4 losses. Before we get carried away, the table also shows that we have the worst defensive tally in the top have having conceded 59 goals.
Regardless of the result between Aberdeen and Dundee United on Tuesday, we know that victories over Inverness and Aberdeen would deliver a second runners up finish in consecutive years. Whatever happens the players and management have given us far more than we expected and they deserve a big turnout on Wednesday to urge them toward the prize.
