Motherwell rarely have the boost of an opening day win. The table below lists the dismal record of the last eight seasons and it shows only one win. Are we due to reverse the losing habit? The results in the opening series of games often set the tone for the rest of the season. Last time the fixture computer matched Motherwell with the top half finishers from the previous season. Surely we will be dealt a better hand this time?

There will be a trip or two to Perth this season and we will renew our acquaintance with McDairmid Park for the first time since January 2004. Will St Johnstone be able to mimic Hamilton and survive in the top league in their promotion season?
Our pre-season schedule will be unusual this time around. Only one friendly has been scheduled (v Wigan, Saturday 8 August) but there is the possibility that we may have had up to six Europa League games before the league season kicks off.
We will have the delight of a new playing surface at Fir Park and a new manager at the helm.
The first round of games is scheduled for the weekend of August 15.
