Should He Stay or Should He Go?

There is no doubt that Gordon can still turn in some magnificent performances. In the second half against Celtic he kept us in the game when we could easily have collapsed. Skippy’s late show would have meant nothing if Bellamy and Hartson had already put us three down. However, the first goal was possibly an error – not a howler by any means but the sort of little mistake which seems to be creeping into his game.

There have also been some questions asked about his reactions in keeping rebounds under control and his performance around the time of the cup final was poor. But was that just a natural run of bad form which affects everyone or is it a systematic decline; father time catching up with him?

It’s probably impossible to say for sure unless you know a lot about goalkeeping, see Marshall in training or quite possibly both. One thing which does seem certain is that we need an adequate back up for our veteran ‘keeper. If the possibility of injuries increases would it be better having a new number one and Marsh as cover? Whether or not that would be acceptable to him is highly debatable.

It seems like Terry wants Marsh to stay although with what role in the team is unclear. With the transfer windows in place, if Marshall is our number one but has a dip in form in the middle of October, we could be in trouble. Having said that, it is fair to say we have not had as solid and dominating goalie as him for years.

So what does Terry do? This is why he’s the manager…and given his track record so far, I think the decision is in capable hands. Terry knows best!
