McGhee & Leitch

Many of the faces involved in this latest managerial merry-go-round have passed through the doors at Fir Park. Alex McLeish started the circus when he was lured to Birmingham and our man was quickly placed in the frame as a potential replacement.

His ability to transform the fortunes of Motherwell in the last six months and his recent impressive appearances under very trying circumstances suggested that he was a major contender. The bookmaker's odds ebbed and flowed as each of the contenders made comments about their prospects but it seems now that the successful man is George Burley.

The Motherwell link continues as Burley gave us a turn in 88/90 (and for a short spell in 93/94) when he showed some high class defending skills before moving on to become player manager at Ayr and we congratulate him for the impending appointment. Just to add to the link it has been suggested that Billy Davies might be targeted as a replacement for Burley at Southampton.

McGhee, as ever, handled himself impeccably throughout the saga. 'Well fans, though grateful to have the immediate threat lifted, will not be lulled into believing that Mark will remain with us for many years to come. We remain delighted at the entertainment he and the players have delivered to date and just hope that the bubble refuses to burst!
