The momentum built up by several excellent wins and has been halted and our manager changed his focus from Motherwell to Scotland for a few days.
When we return to action it will be with a long trip to the Highlands in what is likely the decisive battle for us in the push for the top six. With Celtic to finish the pre-split fixtures, we probably need a win in Inverness to secure our place in the top half.
Whether or not that happens, we are surely safe from relegation which was Mark McGhee’s primary task and the fact we enter the final stages in contention is a testament to him.
Sadly he is up against John Hughes, a manager who has had the better of him almost regardless of which teams they were coaching at various times over the years.
Such hoodoos appear random but eventually it has to be acknowledged one coach has a flaw, or attribute, which is decisive.
We can only hope McGhee has been doing his homework on his recent plane journeys!
