Partick Thistle put up a decent defensive effort against Celtic but they never threatened and it always looked like a matter of how many the visitors would score. Larsson, Sutton and Lambert all missed chances and it was beginning to look shaky until the alien man scored inside the last twenty minutes. As ever, the media fawned over the Jags but they have failed to win any of their opening four games (three at home) and are now averaging less than a goal a game.
Hearts defeated Dunfermline 2-0 in a game that probably has no meaning to us whatsoever. In the relegation battle at Dens, Dundee scored two late goals to defeat Hibs 2-1. This eases the pressure on Jim Duffy but Bobby Williamson will be sweating even more than usual. Hibs next game is at Fir Park next week and we should be looking to keep their bad run going.
Owen Coyle was the only ex-‘Well man to hit the target today, scoring in Falkirk’s demolition of Alloa. This keeps them top of the league, which is good for us if you’re feeling nervous about our own prospects. St Johnstone won away at Arbroath to keep in touch in what is already looking like a two horse race.
Our local rivals had a laughably bad day. Two own goals gave Berwick a come from behind win at Hamilton, Airdrie were stuffed at Dumbarton while having a man sent off and Albion Rovers returned from Gretna with nothing but a two goal defeat.
In England, McMillan and McCulloch started Wigan’s 2-0 win at Notts County. Ged Brannan was on the bench. Stuart Elliott and Greg Strong both missed Hull’s home draw with Bury. Stuarty has a knee injury while Strong was suspended after a sending off.
