Motherwell earned only two points from tough games against Celtic and Rangers. It is a measure of our form that many felt we should have had more.
It was such a pity that our impressive first half display was undone with a sloppy start to the second. It was a certainty that the Rangers team would have a more aggressive and desperate approach in mind as they emerged from the tunnel after the break. That message had been stressed in the Motherwell dressing room but our boys failed to react.
Stephen Robinson 's post-match comments focussed on the many positive aspects of the game but included "The first fifteen minutes of the second half cost us." The loss of the quick double inside the first three minutes of the second period led to the loss of two points.
That said, there was much to be cheered by those wearing claret and amber colours. In Curtis Main we have unearthed a gem. He is a strong, two footed striker with an eye for goal. He never shirks the chase, pesters defenders with his desire to take the ball and delivers chances for his teammates. His involvement was crucial in both of our goals. Five goals in ten league appearances is more than a decent return and we can be grateful he's on our books for another season.
Main sends this one into the DC Stand
Alan Campbell's name on the teamsheet must draw a shudder from opposition midfielders. If his development continues he can look forward to more than U21 recognition at national level. The club obtained his signature on a four year contract extension in October, a decision that looks better with every passing week. Cédric Kipré, Tom Aldred and Charles Dunne show a growing understanding a defensive unit.
Although the chance of a top half finish remains an unlikely possibility it must be the manager's priority to ensure that he has our best eleven fit and ready for the semi-final. The use of some cotton wool treatment might be a sensible play for the remaining pre-split matches.
