If the “winning ways” continue for most of the next five matches (Inverness (h), Dundee United (a), Dunfermline (h), St Johnstone (h) and St Mirren (a)) we might be in a position to threaten the 60 point haul that we achieved season 2007/8 when Mark McGhee led us to third. But let’s not get carried away.
Although the performance was far from our best it has to be remembered that Lasley, Jennings, Higdon and Hutchison were all missing. There were a couple of players on show that may have made their last appearance in claret and amber and the manager may be looking to move them on before the month’s end.
Our new man made the best of his half hour on the pitch. He’ll face much sterner opposition next time but nevertheless Motherwell fans have every reason to hope that we’ll see him add to his tally.
The cup draw takes place on Monday afternoon and we’ll be paired with one of the following:-
Aberdeen, Ayr United, Celtic or Peterhead, Dundee or Kilmarnock, Dundee United, Falkirk, Hearts, Hibs, Inverness or Dunfermline, Morton, Queen of the South, Rangers, Ross County, St Johnstone, St Mirren or Hamilton.
The likelihood must be that we meet one of the other SPL clubs but there is a chance that a trip to lower league opposition might provide an interesting weekend at the start of February. Let’s hope that Andre Villas-Boas and Marcello Lippi do us a favour.
