The cap is a deserved reward for our boy (although how long he’ll remain in Claret and Amber is a little uncertain) as his form this season has fully merited the recognition.
He was in familiar company on the Hampden turf as his pal McFadden was there to welcome him. Faddy’s priceless goal in the first half inspired the team to a heroic victory. It would be unfair to single out any individual in the game as everyone worked tirelessly first to get the momentum going and produce the goal.
‘Well fans would be delighted but not surprised to see McFadden’s goal. He took a long inswinging corner and picked up the clearing header. A pass to Fletcher and a neat return on the edge of the box allowed our former player to run in and shoot into the same corner as his goal in the cup semi against Rangers. “Probably the most important goal of my life” he said afterwards.
Pearson came on when Scotland were having to ride their luck against wave after wave of Dutch attacks. The game was played at a frantic pace and it took some time before our man got up to speed.
He had the side’s only chance to kill the game in the second half. Kenny Miller beat the offside flag and collected the ball deep on the right wing. Pearson ran thirty yards to arrive in the box and his first time attempt to side foot the ball just ran past the post.
What a great day for Scotland fans – and a great day for Motherwell fans too. Who would have believed that two members of the Mighty ‘Well team which started the season would play (and play so well) in the international play off within three months.
