Our unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday at Livingston but Partick Thistle will also be disappointed at dropping two points at home to Dundee United. United’s away draw means they are only a point behind us – the relegation battle is well and truly on.
Untouchables at Firhill
Our performances against Partick Thistle have been poor. The match at Fir Park was dire but a late goal denied Thistle a win they didn’t really deserve. Sadly they deserved their success in the match at Firhill. We were shambolic in every aspect of the game and the Jags were well worth their 2-0 win.
So will we be able to turn it round this time? The performance against Livingston suggests not. We have struggled against other poor teams this year, for various reasons. Whether we struggle because the opposition fights as much as us, because there is less space for our fast and skilful players to run into or because we’ve just been unlucky is up for debate. Whatever the reason, Terry Butcher needs to figure out a change somewhere in the team or tactics. Another loss on Thursday and the winter break will be spent ruing the missed opportunity of our last two games. A win on the other hand, will have everyone relaxed and satisfied with their ability to cope with the challenge ahead.
It is hard to see where Terry will make changes though. We have a limited squad and with that comes limited tactical options. The one alternative that does spring to mind is going to 3-5-2 and this would probably match up man for man against Thistle. If we can do this and win our individual battles, we may have a chance.
However, other than blind faith, there is no reason to suggest we will improve our performances against fellow diddies. Yet again we will leave shaking our heads wondering how we lost, this time the score will be 1-2.
