It was not a surprise to find the manager heaping praise on his players for the way they set about the game. Even in the opening half hour when goal scoring chances failed to materialise we did not look like conceding. Thistle were too busy protecting their area to mount any meaningful attack.
Is it too fanciful to look five games ahead and consider is we might scramble into the top six? The fixtures ahead of the April split are Hamilton (a), Dundee United (h), Aberdeen (h), Inverness (a) and Celtic (h).
The teams outside of the top three are so tightly bunched that any win or loss can result in movement of two or three places in either direction. It seems remarkable that after 28 games in what we consider to be a poor season only 3 points separate us from Dundee in sixth place.
A tough test awaits on Saturday. Our record on Hamilton's artificial surface is awful. We haven't even scored against them in the last six attempts on their home patch. But with confidence boosted after scoring three against Partick Thistle we must travel with the belief that the winless run can be ended.
The 25th anniversary of our second Scottish Cup win brings with it a chance for those of us old enough to remember the wonderful day. The club has a list of events already in hand - a Q&A session on Thursday 24 March, a formal dinner on 8 May and a cup final re-run on 18 May.
While those events will stir fond memories they also highlight the 25 year gap since fans were able to cheer the sight of a Motherwell captain lifting silverware. Let's hope we are soon able to celebrate a current rather than past glory. It has been too long!
