Motherwell held on to the slender lead despite Thistle’s best endeavours for the last third of the game. We had several chances to score a comforting second but lacked the killing touch. Our defending was brave and whole hearted; there is no criticism of the commitment shown in protecting our goal. But such was our concentration on repelling attacks that we gave up our ability to hold the ball.
We've got no shirts!
The game turned on the hour when Carswell hobbled off. Our midfield rhythm was disrupted but surely the introduction of Lawson would allow us to maintain control? Not so. The visitors stepped up the pace and we were on the back foot for the remaining half hour. Things didn't get better when Vigurs came on.
When the ex-County pair arrived many thought that the midfield trio of Lawson, Vigurs and Lasley would provide an efficient unit to allow us decent possession and distribution. That didn't happen and for much of the time we had ten defenders banked in out last third.
McFadden was struggling for much of the second half and it seemed that Kerr would be the natural replacement to offer some defensive cover on the right wing but it was Anier who spent the closing 20 minutes on the bench. No doubt the management team knew the reason.
While we have grounds for concern the fact is that the game was won and that alone will give a boost to the squad as preparations for the Saturday tea time clash with Kilmarnock are developed. The manager with (we hope) have a busy time on the phone as he works to deliver the pace we so clearly lack. Good luck Stuart!
