No More Farewells from Butcher

The idea of an official farewell came presumably from the questioner as there has been no public suggestion of such an event from Fir Park. Indeed, the notion of an ex-manager returning to his former club before his predecessor has settled into the job is not welcome regardless of the good natured tone of the departure.

It was clear to all who witnessed the post match procession after the last game of the season that this was a man with other plans. We sent him on his way with our best wishes and there would be no point in a repeat performance.

Here son, I won't need this anymore.

For the record Terry is quoted below.

"I would find it difficult to go back and see them now and say cheerio When I think about it, I don't want to say goodbye to them. I hate farewells. I would get so emotional if I had to go back to Fir Park and see the players. I think it is best to leave it as it is.

It is such a special club with special players and special members of staff. I grew to love Motherwell as a club as much as I did Rangers and Ipswich. I might be away but I will never forget it. I had a lot of good times.

But all things must come to an end and it was a nice conclusion to my time there as manager. Maurice Malpas is now in charge and I was delighted to see him promoted from assistant manager into the main job.

He is the right choice and will do well."
