Although the teams had different fortunes in the midweek Betfred Cup ties, Motherwell were thrashed by Celtic while St Johnstone beat Hearts, that will be forgotten when kick off comes to the immaculate Fir Park surface.
Mark McGhee will ensure that the win over Kilmarnock is used to remind our players that they are more than capable of overcoming St Johnstone and there is certain to be a change in formation. The five at the back tactic that was employed at Parkhead will be forgotten and the usual four man defence will start. McHugh missed out on Wednesday but the repair to his gashed forehead may have healed sufficiently to make him available for selection.
Not so many stewards needed this time?
St Johnstone drew with Aberdeen last weekend and they will be further encouraged after a late winner against Hearts allowed them to progress into the League Cup quarter final. Scobbie had to be replaced at half time in that game and he could be doubtful for Saturday.
Last season’s four meetings resulted in only one Motherwell victory while the visitors enjoyed three 2-1 wins. Home advantage and the backing of a big ‘Well support might tip the balance and deliver a similar result on Fir Park’s opening day – 2-1.
