Our opponents enjoyed a 2-0 win over St Johnstone on Tuesday and as a result they overtook us in the table. We have a chance to reverse that move but that will require a home win.
Goals from substitutes Doolan and Amoo delivered the midweek victory and the lead Thislte’s goal scoring list. That match was their first at Firhill since early February when they beat Motherwell 1-0 thanks to a last minute deflected goal by Lawless. There was little between the teams three weeks ago and little has changed.
The last Motherwell win over Thistle
Motherwell won the first meeting at Fir Park at the end of September. Stephen Craigan was in charge for that game immediately after the departure of Ian Baraclough. Thistle’s trips to Motherwell have not given cause to celebrate in 20 years.
McGhee and a few of his players have talked of the mental strength needed to overcome the costly Late Goal Syndrome that has dogged our progress since the turn of the year. It might be that the best way to eliminate the risk is to have a comfortable lead as the game enters the closing stage!
Our goal scoring options were reduced at Perth when McDonald was forced to curtail his pre-match warm up due to a tight hamstring. It is to be hoped that the precaution of resting him pays off and that he resumes his partnership with Moult on Saturday.
After three failed attempts to register a home league win this year it’s time for a change. A 3-1 margin will do nicely.
