It is now down to us or Inverness for the final spot in the top half with the other teams now out of the equation. The situation is simple – win on Saturday and we're safe, draw and Inverness must win all three remaining games, lose and Inverness need seven to overtake us. With Inverness travelling to Kilmarnock and hosting both Hearts and Celtic it is hard to see them not losing at least once.
It is plain to see in our squad that injuries and the huge effort put in recently are taking a heavy toll. Some players are missing altogether and many of those who played against United were running on empty come the full time whistle. Jennings will be suspended while Gunning, Hammell and Jeffers are just three of those carrying knocks of some description.
Hearts do have some problems in their own pool with injury and suspension but they have a deeper choice than us and have coped with such issues all season. They defeated us at Fir Park in the last meeting of the teams and seem certain to finish third but we can take heart from an excellent 2-0 victory at Tynecastle back in the autumn – Chris Humphrey was superb and goals from Sutton and Blackman gave us the win.
This will be a very tough match and at our best we can certainly take something. However, it may be one step too far and after a 2-1 defeat we may have a nervous wait on our hands to hear how Inverness get on next week.
