Next up - Aberdeen (again)

We have already chalked up two league wins against Aberdeen this season and if we are to mount a realistic challenge for second place then a third success is required.  Rangers and Dundee United are matched in a lunchtime kick off in a game that can only strengthen us but whatever the outcome in that game Motherwell will have their objective clear.

There will be at least two changes to our starting eleven as Hutchinson and Clancy serve their one match suspensions.  The pair have formed a regular partnership in recent weeks and their absence will give Stuart McCall a problem.  Craigan was not fit enough to be on the bench last week and it might need some of John Porteus’ magic to enable him to start this time.  Still, our options are limited.  Page acquitted himself well during his hour in the cup game and his height will be needed if we are to counter the threat from Vernon, Fallon et al.

The changes in defence underline the need for us to score a few at the other end.  Our attacking players could ease the pressure if they are on form.  Humphrey's appearance as a second half substitute last week was impressive and he might get the nod over Murphy .

One threat that we won’t have to consider is Fyvie.  His ligaments were damaged when Lasley’s poor tackle floored him.  We can expect Craig Brown to roll out a long list of players who are unable to play for one reason or another but fortunately he has chosen to join a “big club” and he’ll be able to pick a team that will offer us a real challenge.

It promises to be another close affair but with a bit of luck (and no penalty miss!) we might get back on track with a 2-1 win.

UPDATE: 1700 Thursday 16 March

The SFA suspension list reveals that Keith Lasley has been suspended for two games with immediate effect.  He'll miss the games against Aberdeen and Kilmarnock.
