Motherwell fans now have the chance to take control of the club. The plan is for John Boyle’s shares to be transferred over a period of time to the Society until it has majority control.
Details of the Well Society rules still have to be published (they have been approved by the FSA)**** and we’ll have to wait until then to know the detailed structure of the new body. It is anticipated that a first general meeting will be held before the end of the season, assuming the target is met and members will elect the first Society board. Thereafter nominations will be made to the board of the football club.
The joining fees are listed as Junior (£25), Steel (£300), Claret (£1,000), Amber (£5,000) and 1886 (£25,000). All members, regardless of the size of their contribution will be equal partners in a one member – one vote organisation. The benefits that come with membership will vary and range from free MFC TV to a golf day with the players. Though, if you choose the top package you’ll be able to customise your perks.
It is a pity that the launch has come so close to Christmas as an earlier date would have delivered a few memberships with Santa’s sack. However, the teething problems now appear to be overcome and a determined drive will be needed to build up membership.
Supporters and the Lanarkshire community now have a unique chance to own a top flight Scottish club and to alter the football landscape. For years fans have complained that the game has left its roots, now is the chance to start turning the tide.
